This has got to be a first. I’ve never started writing a review while the movie was still playing.
But DreamGirls gets that auspicious honour.
Let’s keep this short, Dreamgirls the movie is based on Dreamgirls the musical. And after sitting through two hours of this crap, it’s very unlikely I’m ever going to subject myself to seeing the stage version.
Quick round up is, the performances are ok, Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Fox and Eddie Murphy stand head and shoulders above the rest, yet the real problem is that for a musical, the songs aren’t great. They don’t connect with the viewer, or at least they certainly didn’t with me. And there doesn’t seem to be a stand out belter, something around which to base the rest of the show.
The result is a overblown 2 hr behemoth that piles cliché on top of cliché, till you simply can’t take anymore.
