Borat

Anyone that’s seen the trailer to this film, then forget it. You’ve already seen the best bits.

Not only that but you’ve also been spared the racism, anti-Semitic jokes and tiresome comedy that passes for entertainment in Borat.

Being a fan of Ali G and Borat since seeing them on the 11 o’clock show and then later in the shows on Channel 4, I was really looking forward to seeing the movie.

After missing it in the cinema, I eventually managed to get a copy of the DVD and watched it the other night.

Couple of things struck me first of all. One, how scared Americans are of anyone that different in anyway from them and Two, how unfunny the film was.

There is no plot, so don’t worry yourself about that, instead we have a series of hit and miss sketches (more miss than hit) where Borat insults or degrades each and every person he meets.

The icing on the cake being the sequence in the Jewish household, where Borat and his producer “escape” into the night.

Now don’t get me wrong, I get Borat, I get the characters, and I get that Sasha Baron Cohen is Jewish himself and is mocking people that actually believe what Borat is insinuating. But I do feel that making money off the back of other peoples ignorance and then claiming to be showing them up, doesn’t wash. The same way if doesn’t wash with Eminem saying he doesn’t hate gay people, but just raps about it to show how others feel. It’s a non-argument as far as I’m concerned. The sweet bumbling foreigner of the TV series, has been replaced with an insidious impostor, that seems never to be far from turning to the camera and winking at how ridiculous his victims are.

Ok political rant over with, promise!

I’m sure loads of people out there will like Borat. I’m sure they’ll like the shock value of what he says and does. But to me the whole thing was a huge disappointment, especially as I’m sure a fan of the TV series , I’d seen the trailers and thought it looked great, and also because I’d heard so many people tell me that the film was hilarious.

With the exception of a couple of moments, I found the whole thing poor and insulting to all concerned.
But then, that’s maybe the point!
